2018 Cedar Park 5K Sponsorship Now Available

(edited 7/25)  The Cedar Park 5K Fundraiser Committee is already working to make our fundraising efforts bigger and better in 2018-19.

Please save the date for the PTC's biggest fundraiser of the year, the Cedar Park 5K, which will be held on Thursday, 10/4/18.  This fun-filled event is open to all parents and volunteers who want to cheer, support, and encourage all of our Cedar Park students.

Cedar Park OBOB Team Places Third at State Tournament

CEDAR PARK CHAMPIONS, FICTION ADDICTION

Cedar Park's OBOB team, Fiction Addiction, finished third at the State OBOB Tournament in Salem last April.

The road to State was a long road of perserverance and dedication. In order to qualify for the State Tournament, Fiction Addiction had to first win the Cedar Park championship.

From there, they fought through the Regional Tournament in March, where they advanced to the top two regional teams and secured their place at the State Tournament, along with Stoller, Meadow Park, and St. Helens Middle Schools. Only 16 teams from across Oregon qualified for the State Tournament. 

Once at the State Tournament, Fiction Addiction won two battles before losing in the semi-finals to John Muir.  However, they bounced back to win the consolation battle, placing third.

Congrats to Fiction Addiction eighth graders Aila (Ash) H., Tierney G., Anouk C., and Claire K. for an incredible OBOB season. Thanks is also due to Cedar Park LMA Debbie Hernandez and all our CPMS OBOB volunteers.

Sunset PTO Announces Open Positions for 2018-19

To The Cedar Park PTO:

As we are closing out our school year, the Sunset PTO is already thinking about 2018-2019.  We have a few open PTO positions we would like to share with you. We want any interested incoming parents to know about the opportunities we have available.

1. College & Career Center Lead. Requirement is 1-4 hours per week. Our volunteer coordinators have a full job description of this, so please email Kara Stark (karastark@comcast.net) if you are interested.

2. Communications Coordinator.  We need someone to manage Facebook, PTO Website, and activities emails.  

3. Co-Merchandise person to coordinate Apollo gear sales. Our current co-coordinator is Jennifer Dixon, who will be in her 2nd year next year. Please email Jennifer (dixon.jennifer@comcast.net) if you may be interested in co-chairing this position with her.  

Good luck with the remainder of the school year.  We look forward to welcoming the next class of Freshman to Sunset!

Timbers' Stand Together Initiative Boosts CPMS Courtyard

Last Monday, volunteers from the Timbers Stand Together initiative descended on Cedar Park's courtyard to clean, improve, and beautify CPMS' valuable garden space. 

Through the work of Christina Mackin, BSD's Community Resource Coordinator, and Trisha Parks, CPMS Humanities teacher, Stand Together included Cedar Park on its list of projects for the Timbers-sponsored community outreach. Stand Together is a comprehensive, week-long community initiative that supports dozens of nonprofit projects and volunteer opportunities across Portland.

Orchard Supply Hardware at Peterkort donated $200 worth of dirt and plants. 

The crew arrived at 1PM on Monday, 6/11/18, including volunteers ready, willing and able to weed, trim, clean, level, cart gravel, and move both trellises and greenhouse to new locations. Jack Jewsbury, a favorite retired player, and Foster Langsdorf, a current Timbers player, worked side by side with volunteers from Hampton Lumber and Cedar Park.  

Elizabeth Tufty's leadership was instrumental to the success of the endeavor. Tufty, a CPMS Math teacher, coordinated the project by gathering the donations, planning the work, and directing the volunteers. 

Two hot hours later, the courtyard was transformed.  Students have used the area to make paper-mache pinantas, complete a science lab, and play jenga. The faculty used the courtyard for the end of year celebration. 

The couryard cleanup has provided an improved outdoor space for our students to enjoy with their classes during school hours.  Since the courtyard is within the school, THPRD does not manage it.  Therefore, CPMS is dependent on dedicated teachers and volunteers to weed, clean, water and donate plants for upkeep. 

The last time Cedar Park had a clean up was 10 years ago through Sunset Presbyterian. Since then, the area had became overgrown and weedy.  

Special thanks to the Portland Timbers, Orchard Supply, Intel, Stand Together, and Columbia Sportswear for their hard work and generous donations. 

Another round of applause is due to CPMS teachers, Trisha Parks and Elizabeth Tufty, for their hard work and perseverance to make this improvement a reality, as well as to Mr. Steve Tufty, an active CPMS volunteer.

Upcoming Cedar Park Changes for 2018-19

Even as this year winds down, Cedar Park is already looking forward to 2018-19.  Here are the currently known changes and improvements that will be implemented next school year.

Facility Improvements

BSD’s bond facility improvements continue at Cedar Park this summer. The following projects are slated for CPMS:

• An entire new baseball fence surrounding the field

• Repainted lockers

• Gym floor and our updated school logo to be completely sanded down and repainted

• Repaved front parking lot

• Entire interior of the building to be repainted (next fall)

First Day of School

• The first day of school for 6th grade is Monday, 8/27.  7th and 8th grade will start on 8/28. This is the first time in recent memory that BSD will start before Labor Day.

8th Grade Math Curriculum

• All 8th graders will move to AGS 1 (Algebra/Geometry/Statistics).  This will put them on track to take AGS 2 as freshman.  Those needing additional support will have the opportunity to repeat AGS 1 as freshmen.

• Because of this challenging math curriculum, the eighth grade schedule will return to equal time for each core class (eliminating the double Humanities block).

STEM Enrichment Elective

• In lieu of Science or Humanities Enrichment, students will now be offered a STEM Enrichment elective.  This is a pass/fail elective that offers hands-on learning to STEM topics.

Staff

• Not a lot of staff changes, though some 6th grade teachers are moving to 8th grade.  There will be several new 6th grade teachers.

Advisory

• Will only be held on Thursday afternoons (a change from its current Thurs/Friday morning sessions).  The CPMS administrators hope to have a more directed curriculum for the advisory program.

Counseling

• Cedar Park counselors will now loop with a specific class, ensuring that students will have the same counselor for their entire time at CPMS.  

Summa Transition

• Next year, the Summa program will only be offered for 7th and 8th graders as the program is transitioned to Meadow Park.  BSD is consolidating the Summa programs back to three middle schools.

Beaverton HS Facebook Group Available to Incoming 9th Graders

Family members of incoming Beaverton High School ninth graders are invited to join the closed Facebook group 'Bucky's Parent Network.'

This is a group where you can ask questions and receive information about our high school. It is a positive space and no marketing that is unrelated to the school is allowed.

Volunteers Needed for Chromebook Check-in

Volunteer shifts are available for our annual Chromebook return.  

Tuesday, 6/12 

• 9:25am to 12:25pm (six volunteers needed)
• 12:25pm to 2:25pm (three volunteers needed)
• 2:25pm to 3:50pm (six volunteers needed)

Thursday, 6/14

• 9:40am to 11:30am (three volunteers needed)
• 12:20pm to 2:20pm (six volunteers needed)
• 2:25pm to 3:50pm (four volunteers needed)

SIGN UP HERE TO GRAB YOUR SHIFT.

We will need help at varying stations for a successful Chromebook return. 

1. Tape and Bag Station - Volunteers ensure 6th and 7th grade students who are returning to Cedar Park for the 2018-2019 school year have placed the red labeling tape on their Chromebook and Chromebook charger with the student's name written on the tape. Volunteers oversee the storage of Chromebook charging cables neatly placed in plastic zipper bags. 

2. Cleaning Station - Guide students through the initial cleaning process for their Chromebook. Remind them to wipe screen and keys, remove any stickers and/or graffiti. 

3. Evaluation Station - Inspect the Chromebook for damages, help guide students through filling out the damage evaluation form. Direct students with severe Chromebook Damage to Ms. Hitsman.

4. Circulation Desk - Check In - Help Library Staff collect Chromebooks and charging cables from the students. Help Library Staff sort the returned Chromebooks into storage bins alphabetically by last name.
