CPMS Art Literacy Announces Changes

Screen Shot 2017-10-20 at 7.46.16 AM.png

We’ve gone through a renaissance and we’re heading back to ancient Egypt!

New Format and Location

Due to the customized nature of this year’s master schedule, it was difficult to carve out time when everyone in one grade was available simultaneously. In order to accommodate this tedious class schedule, we’ve moved to a different presentation/production model – smaller groups! And a new location - the library!

We look forward to more interaction with the students and the ability to coordinate with the
Humanities teachers to provide a relevant and interesting program. Our project this year will focus on ancient Egypt.

Mark Art Lit as a Preference in mVP

In order to ensure the success of the Art Literacy Program, we need volunteers and coordinators. To volunteer during the production part of the lesson, make sure that you checked the box next to Art Literacy in the MyVolunteerPage system. Once you do that, you will receive informative emails specific to your role in making Art Literacy possible.

Grade Level Coordinators Needed

We need Art Literacy Grade Level Coordinators for both 6th & 7th grades. You will work with the designated Humanities teacher for the grade to get dates for each group of presentations. You will give the presentations to that grade, or coordinate the volunteers who wish to present the lesson.

If this is something you would like to try, please email us at cpms.art.lit@gmail.com. Thank you for your help in continuing the tradition of supporting Art Literacy at Cedar Park.

Sincerely,
Daphne Teals & MaryBeth Piccirilli
Art Literacy Co-Coordinators

PTC Staff Appreciation Monthly Coffee Run

Facing a full classroom of 11 to 14 year-olds each morning is not for the faint of heart.  It takes a lot to be an effective middle school teacher– enthusiasm, patience, passion... and for many, a decent cup of coffee.

Support our teachers and their sanity by donating to the PTC's monthly staff appreciation coffee run.  Once a month, several volunteers sign-up to bring in a pound of pre-ground, non-flavored coffee to restock the coffee coffers in the staff lounge.

Donations can be left in the front office or in the teacher's lounge.  The brilliance of this opportunity is that your child can transport your donation to the office for you.  October's donations are due this Friday, 10/13.

Sign up here to donate a pound of coffee and save a teacher's morning.  The sign-up lists the entire school year, so take as many spots as you can.  CPMS teachers will thank you.

CPMS Student Store Open for Business

Screen Shot 2017-10-05 at 6.59.48 AM.png

The Student Store has been an early morning tradition for many years at Cedar Park.  Located smack dab in the front lobby, students are able to purchase school-supplies, limited snacks, and PE t-shirts between 8:50-9:15am, Monday through Friday.

This valuable addition to CPMS is entirely run by PTC volunteers.  Check out myvolunteerpage and click on Opportunities, filter by Cedar Park, and scroll to Student Support to view the open Student Store shifts.

Student Store lead, Carrie Fox, is happy to train any new parents who are curious about this unique opportunity to witness the CPMS student experience.

2017-18 Art Lit Line-up Announced; Volunteers Needed

CPMS PTC's Art Lit leadership team is proud to announce the three units for 2017-18. Ancient Egypt, Roy Lichtenstein and Diego Rivera/Frida Kahlo will all be featured this school year.

Screen Shot 2017-09-21 at 6.49.46 AM.png

The Art Lit program at CPMS is slightly different from the elementary model.  Each grade will watch and listen to an educational slideshow in the gym, presented by Art Lit chairs MaryBeth Piccirilli & Daphne Teals.  Students and volunteers then break out into their classrooms to take part in a hands-on project.

Volunteers are given all the supplies necessary to complete the classroom project. Teachers remain in classrooms, helping to ensure classroom management while students complete their piece.  The entire experience is an awesome opportunity to see your child's classroom first-hand and participate in their day.

ART LIT SCHEDULE

Each unit will be one day only, so all three grades will have their presentation and do their projects on the same day. Those dates have already been scheduled:

  • Wed, October 11, 2017– POSTPONED as of 10/4.  New date coming soon.
  • Wed, Feb. 7, 2018
  • Wed, April 11, 2018

Additionally, grades will only have roughly 70 minutes to listen to the presentation and finish the project.  The tentative timeline is as follows:

  • 6th Grade– 9:15-10:23am
  • 7th Grade– 10:27-11am (LUNCH) 11:34am-12:06pm
  • 8th Grade– 1:09-2:20pm

PREVIEW DAYS

New this year!  Interested art lit volunteers will have an option to attend a preview day for each artist.  This will allow them to get a sneak peak into the artist and the project prior to the official Art Lit day.

If you would like to be included in the CPMS art lit database and be invited to these preview days, please mark Art Lit in your mVP interests.  Update your preferences through the myvolunteerpage.com (mVP) system.  Select My Profile-> Interests and mark Art Lit.

The CPMS Art Lit program is funded by the PTC and your 5K donation.  All questions can be directed to MaryBeth Piccirilli & Daphne Teals.

WE STILL NEED YOU– Volunteering Guidelines at CPMS

While volunteering in a middle school is a slightly different experience than elementary, your time and efforts are still necessary for a successful school year.  Our PTC offers  many different programs and options for parents and community members willing to help support a positive and fun student experience.

Before you can volunteer at CPMS, you must have a cleared background check within mVP and be added to our CPMS Volunteer database.  Please go to our Volunteering page to get started.

Below you will find the guidelines for volunteering at CPMS:

Identification

In an effort to increase safety and security, all volunteers need to wear a school name tag at all times when in the building. Adults not wearing proper identification should be directed to the school office.

Signing In and Out

Please sign in and out of the building when you volunteer. DO NOT FORGET TO PUT ON YOUR BADGE AND LANYARD. If you do not have a badge, see the secretary.

Reasons for signing in and out:

  • Safety and security of students, staff, parents and community members.
  • Volunteer hours statistics may be used in grant applications qualifying under in-kind contributions.
  • Volunteer statistics may be needed for verification of volunteer match grants.
  • If you are volunteering at home, please log your volunteer hours on http://www.myvolunteerpage.com

Sight and Sound Policy

Beaverton School District Board Policy IICC states that:

All volunteers shall operate under the direction of a licensed staff member and shall be within sight and sound of a licensed staff member while working with students. This policy applies to parents as well as non-parent volunteers and is for the safety of students, staff and volunteers.

Confidentiality

Volunteers must protect the teachers’ and students’ right to privacy. You may NOT disclose school information or personal matters which you may have overheard. Discuss student problems or concerns only with the teacher, staff member with whom you are working, or principal.

ABSOLUTELY NO PHOTOGRAPHY OR VIDEOING OF STUDENTS WITHOUT APPROVAL FROM THE ADMINISTRATION.

Professionalism

Although the job is voluntary, the commitment is professional. Maintain an attitude of mutual respect and confidence. Familiarize yourself with school policies and classroom practices. ABSOLUTELY NO SWEARING! Please dress appropriately!

Dependability and Punctuality

The staff and students are relying on you!  Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator if you are unable to make a shift. Please arrive a little early to allow for time to sign in and get to where you need to be.

Liability Coverage

To be eligible for the District’s liability coverage, YOU MUST SIGN IN AND OUT EACH TIME YOU ARE IN THE BUILDING.  Should an accident occur, please report it to the Principal and the Volunteer Coordinator as soon as it occurs.

Bathroom Use

DO NOT USE STUDENT BATHROOMS.  Staff bathrooms are available in the office and in Corridor 2 near C-Hall.

Questions can be directed to Angela Redmon, CPMS Director of Volunteers.
